It’s always a real treat to see two drummers onstage especially when they are
equipped with the astounding ability that Andy and Craig have. With Andy being a
Drumtech favourite visiting Drumtech each year this time was going to be different!
Joined by Craig Blundell (Bruce Dickinson) the duo kicked off the evening with a
friendly battle demonstrating staggering chops and superb independence, by the
time they had finished students knew it was going to be a “choppy” night!

Andy and Craig are highly skilled players who have put in a lot of time to develop their
groove and chops. Andy is self-taught and has been playing for over twenty years and is
currently gigging with prog rock band “IQ”. Craig on the other hand is not self taught and
spent four years in the Royal Marines and stressed the importance of having a good teacher.

Andy and Craig stressed how us
as drummers are all on the same
team and should share ideas and
learn from each other as much as
possible. With the industry using
more technology and programming
becoming ever more popular it’s
important that we can beat the
“machine” and offer what they
can’t such as “Feel”.

Sitting at the front they began
answering questions one of which
was to Craig regarding a previous
clinic he did where he demonstrated
modulation playing along to a
Liberty X track which is in 4/4 but
being Craig he played it in 15/16! To
explain it he did it again for us and
broke it down and explained how he
counted it using sub-divisions. With it being quite a technical evening both Andy and Craig stressed how us as

This quickly moved on to tuning and how to tune your kit correctly. The answer to this?
There is no written rulebook and no right or wrong way to tune your kit. However they
heavily recommend changing the resonant head as many drummers just change their batter heads and forget about the resonant. Different drummers use different methods, a common one, which Craig learnt from “Gregg Bissonette” was tighten the lugs with fingers first then half turns using the key going opposite to opposite in a clockwise direction. This can be quite time consuming and you also have to tap in between each lug to see if the tone is even.

With students being given so much information to digest including Andy and Craig breaking
down and giving away all of their chops and tricks it was an intense but extremely enjoyable
Master Class. To finish off on a high, Andy and Craig played together again along to some
samples using Craig’s new toy the Roland S.P.D.S sampling pad. A great finish to another
great Master Class!
