19th June (the night before the big Drumtech graduation) we had a great clinic at
Drumtech from Andy Gangadeen. Andy bought his bands (The Bays) bass player,
Chris Taylor along with him to provide some sub-sonics to complement Andy’s foray
of beats.
If you’re not up on what Andy has done in the past then let me enlighten you. Andy was a
session player for many years, in this time he played with The Spice Girls and M People.
Andy never enjoyed playing these pop gigs and a while ago decided to stop doing them all
together. Since, Andy has laid down the drums on Massive Attack tracks such as ‘Inertia
Creeps’ and ‘Angel’. However, his main project has been The Bays. If you have never heard
of The Bays, or never seen them live then go. You will never be able to by a CD of The Bays,
as they will never record any material. They see themselves as an ever evolving musical
experience. Their live experience is amazing. With Drums, Bass, DJ and a guy doing the
techy thing on the computers. They play all types of Electronica, from Drum ‘n’ Bass to
House to Hip-Hop.
Andy started the clinic with a 20 minute performance of many different styles including
Hip-Hop, Trip-Hop and Big Beat. He then went on to field questions from the students on
everything from the technology that he uses to his experiences playing with The Spice Girls
and how he got together with Massive Attack.
Andy completed the clinic with a Drum ‘n’ Bass set. Drumtech would like to thank Andy and
Chris for a great master class. |
