ASH SOAN

Ash Soan of Faithless, Belinda Carlisle, Lewis Taylor and squeeze to name just a few,
visited the school this week along with Julian Crampton of Incognito on bass. With all
the high profile gigs and also being a Drumtech student once himself, current
students were able to get great advice on the next step, when their time at Drumtech
sadly ends.

Kicking things off to a great start the duo jammed out a funky piece, Ash playing a great
groove with ghost notes and the odd broken ride line it really complemented the “Theme”
bass line that Julian was playing. As soon as they began they really “rocked” the room, with
everyone tapping their foot along they both played well together. The great thing about this
Masterclass was how the students took notice of Julian just as much as Ash and to be fair it was hard not to! Playing everything with great enjoyment as soon a he struck a note, you
could tell he was instantly in the “zone”. As soon as they finished there was a huge
round of applause followed by a short silence during which Ash said “any questions”, but
with everyone being blown away they ended up going straight into the next Jam! Once again it was great, topping the first and you were able to see the real dynamic awareness they both had.

During each “jam” they
would gradually bring down the
volume, reducing the “snares” to rim- clicks and then bringing it back up. Also their awareness of each other was another great quality they
displayed, each giving space for a
solo whilst jamming, it was a true
example of how a Rhythm section
should be. By the time they had
finished this time round there was
hands in the air and they were able
to have a rest and take time out to answer the questions.

First up was “remembering sets”, as Ash has learnt a fair few during
his career his advice was to listen to the set constantly before attempting to play it, to let it
sink in. Julian also added to this by mention “Teach Sheets” where you can have the
structure written in front of you as a back up just in case you get lost.

As in every masterclass there tends to be a particular piece of advice that gets pushed. For
Ash it was gigging Gigging got him to where he is now and can’t believe how many
drummers there are that are not playing in bands. When Ash attended the school he was out
gigging all the time, which eventually led to his break into the industry. Drummers can often
forget to gig and spend all their time in a practice room. Now although that is important so
are playing gigs and your still learning when you’re performing.

Putting students on the spot Ash asked if anyone would come up and play with Julian! As
you can imagine the room went silent, that was until a brave member in the front row
volunteered. Jamming along with Julian for about ten minutes, throughout which were plenty
of cheers and encouragement from the rest of the students. After they had finished it was
then Julian asking for a volunteer but with the bass players being a little more shy than the
Drummers it was teacher Simon Horn who went up first before then encouraging another
student!

All this in one evening, both Ashley and Julian brought a great vibe to the school and gave
some sound advice. Nice one guys!
