On the evening of 5th December 2005, Rock legend and Deep Purple drummer Ian
Paice gave an awe inspiring master class, to a packed audience full of fellow
drummers, fans and professionals.

The evening kicked off with Drumtech founder and director Francis Seriau introducing Ian,
during which a particular buzz seemed to circulate around the room. Ian then took to the
stage to begin his first solo of the evening and with everyone mesmerized you knew it was
going to be a great evening.

Apart from blowing everyone away with his chops, Ian took a lot of time answering questions,
most of which centered around how he played certain parts of deep purple songs and how
he came up with the ideas. Explaining each question thoroughly Ian also took the time to
demonstrate his dazzling one hand drum roll! This was a real highlight.

When talking of influences Ian explained how he tried (and still does), not to get influenced
by other drummers too much as he wanted to sound original in his own way rather than
emulate others.

To finish on a real high, what better way than to play out with some good “old classics” from
Led Zeppelin and of course Deep Purple. Doing it in real style Ian was joined by Drumtech’s
very own Andrew McKinney (Bass), John Wheatcroft (Guitar), Simon Carter (Keys), Kim
Chandler (Vocals) and third year degree Vocaltech Student, Hugh Neal. This bought the roof
down and gave a sensational finale to a spectacular master class given by a true rock
legend.
