When you go to an induction day you think about the endless forms you have to fill in
and getting used to your new environment. Not at Drumtech! All 1 year diploma
students were treated to a masterclass with Neal Wilkinson (Ultavox, Gang of Four,
Paul McCartney) to mention just a few.

As the room filled up everyone sat eagerly waiting for him to begin, expecting big chops and lots of playing, which was the complete opposite of what Neal did. To everyone’s surprise Neal took the time he had and rather than blowing everyone away with his chops, he talked about his career and gave priceless advice regarding practice, gigs and life as a session player. He advised to get “out there” as much as possible, swap ideas with each other, see gigs, play gigs and most of all enjoy it!

Throughout the masterclass Neal gave endless funny anecdotes relating to his career, one of which was when he did a session for “The Empire Strikes Back” (Star Wars) film where he had to play exactly what Gregg Bisonette had recorded in LA, note for note! Many of you will have heard Neil’s playing without realizing, as he did the session for the Renault advert featuring famous footballer Thierry Henry and every drummer’s favourite Muppet “Animal”. Neil did an eleven bar solo for this advert and if you have seen it then you will know that it’s great! The more Neal talked you could see his experience shining through he was very enthusiastic which rubbed off on to the students, overall it was a great masterclass leaving everyone with great advice and inspiration – Thanks Neal!
