PHIL MATURANO

Students at Drumtech were in for a real treat on October 25th when Phil Maturano came
down to deliver what was a very special Latin Percussion Masterclass. Having been
raised on Rock early in his career before moving onto Latin, Phil has gone on to develop
an inspirational style of play that is enough to amaze even the most technically sound
drummers.

Phil talked about Afro Cuban rhythms and the approach to playing the style authentically. He
talked about various grooves such as the Songo and Samba, as well as talking about the 3 bar cycle, the importance of 6/8 timing in the style, and answered many questions for the audience at hand.

After an hour of highly informative talking, Phil went on to demonstrate his chops and some
grooves, including some amazing single and double pedal work involving playing a clave pattern with his left foot. His playing was so intense, it often sent shivers down the spines of many of the audience members.

Another special guest at the master class was Pete Lockett who joined Phil on stage for a 30 minute improvised jam, which involved Pete having many Indian percussion instruments at his disposal such as the Tabla. After an amazing display of musicianship the crowd gave them a much deserved applause. The two were enjoying the chemistry on stage so much, they couldn’t resist having one last jam, which resulted in the crowd cheering even louder than they did for the previous one.

Drumtech once again provide students with another awe-inspiring master class. Special thanks to Phil and Pete for coming down and showcasing their talents in an amazing master class students and teachers alike will not be forgetting for a long time to come, at least not until the next one anyway.
