Sandro Feliciano stopped by Drumtech during a 3 week stint at Ronnie Scott’s with
Airto Moriera. Sandro, an extremely charismatic figure who allows his personality to
shine through his music, plays the kit as an extension of himself. This approach
numbered one of many philosophical nuggets and conceptual gems to pepper this
masterclass.
Hailing from Brazil, Sandro wanted to develop his ability in straight-ahead jazz, funk and
hip-hop. So, upping sticks, he moved to LA to study at the country of origin. He has now
been based there for the past 7 years. This simple logic has obviously benefited his playing
as he has since performed with such luminaries as George Clinton, Herbie Hancock and of
course Airto.
Stressing the importance of melody, Sandro explained how he openly sings while soloing.
He then presented a piece, specifically written for the occasion. His musicality and
phenomenal dynamic range left us all gob-smacked. Laying down one swinging beast of a
groove after another, all present were left in no doubt as to why he is such demand back in
the States. Swing oozes out of everything he plays. To further illustrate this point Sandro
played straight 8ths on the hi-hats; I swear I could feel them swing.
Later, our very own Bosco de Oliveira joined his fellow country man on stage for an
impromptu percussive jam. The pair locked into each others playing as though they had
been performing together for years. Dissecting their performance afterwards, both explained
why certain instruments and rhythms had been chosen-the answer always being the
same-they were listening to what the other was playing. This was one of the most musical
and educating clinics I have ever attended; showing how our ears are as important (if not
more so) than our hands. Oh did I mention they were both singing throughout? |
