June 2009 At Drumtech it has been a very busy month for me and many of the other students because we have now all come to the end of Term 3, and this means the end of our course and our time at the school. With our lessons and exams finished, an end of year Graduation was held for all the students of Drumtech with many performances to be enjoyed by all. Like usual, the exam week was challenging for everyone at the school, but I managed to find these exams enjoyable and stress free. The Rhythm Section Skills (RSS) exam was really fun and I felt really relaxed doing it. One part of the exam involved me playing a repeated twelve bar Jazz sequence with our Bass teacher Chris. This was a good test as it made me pay attention to the structure of the piece, play the different sections and finish in the right place. Our final composition assignment was a really interesting and creative task as it required us to write a three minute piece of music in any style. This gave us the chance to put into action our composition skills and make something with a melody, rhythm and a full song structure. With the ability to create any style with no restrictions (except length) many students were able to show off the creativity and skills they possessed. Graduation was a really good night for everyone who attended and was a good showcase for some of the talented students that played. The venue for this event was the 02 Shepherds Bush Empire which has been the choice of venue to have the Graduations at for many years. A large spectrum of players performed that night ranging from the Diploma, Master Performance and Bmus students. With seventeen student bands playing that night, there was a huge variety songs and styles to please everyone in the venue. The night was also used to reward certain outstanding students with the recognition they deserve and also reward them with some great prizes. After the graduation, an after party was held by the school at the Redback Tavern in Acton. This was great as it gave everyone a last chance to party and socialise before the end of the term. One sad moment of the Graduation was the announcement that Drumtech's Darryn Farrugia was leaving the school after his many years of teaching. Being one of the heads of drums, Darryn’s departure will be missed by many students and staff at the school. Overall it has been an amazing year at Drumtech, I have developed my skills as a player immensely and now have a much greater understating of the musical world. My time here has been extremely enjoyable and I would like to thank Drumtech and Rhythm for this privilege, and I hope the future goes well for me and everyone else at Drumtech. Tip of the month Turn up on time! Turning up on time or early is always a good way to show other musicians that you are professional and reliable.
